During the process of our wearable structure we created a variety of paper manipulation techniques experimenting with paper folds, reversible folds to discover a fan structure and curving the book pages to give them a golden section composition. By adding shape to the bodice of the wearable structure we stapled the hip areas to form creases which made it contour the model’s figure. The successful elements of our wearable design is the depth of detail being presented through the textures of the folded book pages. The fan shaped paper was built up in layers which lead to a dramatic and textured area on the structure. The overall composition of the wearable piece enhances the model’s figure and forms a powerful statement of the shoulders that are on show, contrasting with the subtle colours of the paper. The lack of colour from the book pages enhances the texture and surface of the paper manipulations that form the structure. The hints of burnt orange throughout the front of the piece attracts the eye and generates a subtle alteration to the simplistic book pages that are displayed as our only material.

For our first design of wearable structures we were given limited materials of books. From the selection of books our task was to construct a wearable piece working in a team with limitation to resources and tools. To progress our ideas with our materials we generated samples of paper manipulation techniques to link with our inspiration and influences of architecture and designer’s work. We admired the old fashioned appearance of the books with the caramel coloured gradient pages and contrasted black text.

Our inspiration for this piece originated from architecture of churches and cathedrals. The elements discovered from church and cathedral architecture were the tall, dominant and detailed structures. Our group focuses on the form of the inside of churches and the eye catching detail of the stonework.

The arches and curved areas of cathedrals inspired us to generate paper manipulations that related with these features.

An important designer that we discovered as a group called Gary Harvey had a large influence on our group when we came to design ideas and thinking about the concept of our recycled materials of books. We concentrated on the eco-friendly elements of our piece and used materials and resources that were recyclable and re-usable such as string and paper. The foundations of cathedral and church structures that inspired us most was the history behind them which also had antiquity links with historic books we used for our wearable piece. We wanted to take elements from our research to develop our ideas and concept of the creation of our wearable structure.
